Detroit Marathon 2013 - Donaldaz - 12-10-2012 08:05 AM

It's been too long since I've seen Ramrod. Who's up for a gathering in Detroit next year? Race date is Oct 20th.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Slowpole - 12-11-2012 02:27 AM

Week before my planned Ironman so I won't be running but can host the pre race meal and partake in all the socializing.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - pa. plodder - 12-12-2012 10:09 AM

If The LVM is on November 17th next year, Detroit just might be my only get-together with LVM21 group in 2013. Hope Detroit reunion happens.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - central texas runner - 12-12-2012 02:32 PM

I wanna go..........and will as long as it's not a RnR race by the time I get there! LOL

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Washgirl - 12-13-2012 12:16 AM

I was just coming to ask if it was an RnR and would someone local make sure I don't book a room in a bad area and I might could do this

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - kathyb - 12-13-2012 12:36 AM

I would love to run Detroit. Has anyone talked to Ramrod about this yet? I think I'll PM him over on FB

I can advise you. Basically anywhere downtown is pretty safe (as big cities go). MGM Grand is really nice if it's not too pricy for you. Greektown Casino/Hotel is a good location for the race but also pricy. The Holiday Inn Express is probably your best price for downtown that would work. Lots of options in the suburbs for much cheaper if you want to go that route. If you stay in the Warren/Sterling Heights area and are really nice to me I can give you a ride to and from the race (about 30 minute drive).

LOL - not likely to happen as the sponsor is locked into 2013. What you get is a good race for a fair price here. Don't know what the price will be in 2013 but the early bird price has been reasonable in the past.
RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - kathyb - 12-13-2012 07:10 AM

Hey, just a heads up to everyone: I checked out hotels and the prices are good. The Doubletree is offering $189/night for a big two room suite. I went ahead and reserved just to be on the safe side. Seems like there are lots of good options downtown and that everything is pretty accessible thanks to the People Mover (don't know exactly what that is, but it I like the sound of it!).

Shoot I can be nice for 10 months  This is going to be my save for run.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - pa. plodder - 01-07-2013 06:27 AM

Thanks Leon for the heads-up on early registration. I am officially entered for the International Half. The US-only Half was tempting because it would be nice to run inside Belle Isle for a change without being pooped out. I've run the Detroit Marathon twice and Belle Isle was always at the end.

I hope a lot of our LVM group is able to make it to Detroit. I might have to miss Las Vegas for the first time. November is a ratings period for those of us in the TV biz, and no vacation time is allowed.

Sorry to here about the Nov. ratings period and the no vacation. Sounds like it's time to retire. :)

Now that first hill on the elevation profile is not as extreme as it looks right? It is just 100ft in 1.5-2 miles? Looks like two climbs about the same..... Now when we go into Canada do we stop and get our passport stamp (please say yes LOL is what I am thinking!)

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Iniquity - 01-08-2013 02:12 AM

I'm so glad I came here!! I didn't know where to book a hotel, so I guess I will go with Kathy and book at Doubletree! Whoo hoo!

The hills would be the bridge to Canada and then the tunnel to the US on the way back. They are not insignificant, but they are early in the race so as long as you don't get overaggressive you'll be fine.

Not sure about the passport check but those Canadians do frisk you. :)
RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Donaldaz - 01-08-2013 05:48 AM

I signed up for the full. That's a great price for the marathon, the hotels - not so much.

As far as the border crossing goes - don't take any pictures, especially when wearing an Elvis costume. You will get stopped.

Whitney...just remember to keep all your layers on until a few miles after the tunnel. Many runners heat up in there and start peeling off the clothes, only to regret it later!

Passports are checked at the packet pick up but like Leon said, can't rule out the frisky Canadians ;)

Sounds like it's a good turn out for the race! Can't wait!

I will keep plugging away at hills
RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Iniquity - 01-11-2013 08:30 AM

So I called the Doubletree on W. Lafayette and the woman had no idea what I was talking about regarding a discount. So I went via website, and the Doubletree is booked!! UGH!!

Therefore, party at the Holiday Inn Express. I may not run faster, but I will definitely run smarter! Unless I get the remedial room :(

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Donaldaz - 02-20-2013 08:07 AM

I'm unfortunetly out of this race. Tammy's friend is getting married that weekend and if I go anywhere it will be to this wedding. Sorry folks.

Bet you can't get a Big Boy at the wedding. Change your mind yet?
RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - central texas runner - 03-01-2013 10:42 AM

If I plan on going to Vegas this year in November I'll have to pass on Detroit in October as I simply cannot afford to do both so close together. Most likely I'll be in Vegas....Hope to see you all there.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - Flyin' Eagle - 09-02-2013 08:59 AM

So with only 7 weeks to go for Detroit now, what's the final verdict? Will there be a Detroit LVM21 party and who will be there?

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - kathyb - 09-02-2013 10:10 PM

I am in! Getting in late on Friday and flying out on Monday. Are you running the full? Maybe we could meet after the race? Not sure who else is still coming. I know that Karen is out. Hopefully some others are still coming. I miss our group.....

Sounds like just you and PA Plodder (John) are coming in for the half. I will be there to cheer on runners and possibly help at an aid station. (I have my ironman the following week so I am definitely not running.) My niece is running her first full and several friends from tri club are running either the half or full. I'd not only would be happy to meet up afterward, but would expect it! (Though I do want to see my niece finish - est. 4 1/2 to 5 hours).
RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - kathyb - 10-04-2013 09:24 PM

I am PM-ing you my cell phone number. I am staying near the finish, so can meet you easily when it is good for you. I am also meeting up with Donna after the race, so it'll be a mini LVM reunion! Any idea what aid station you might be at? Would love to see a friendly face on the course.

Sounds great! Not sure where I will be at this point. I'll let you know. I may just jump around the course some instead of working one aid station.

RE: Detroit Marathon 2013 - pa. plodder - 10-07-2013 11:33 AM

Unfortunately, I've also become a casualty of registering for a race early and then having to no-show. My wife and a few of her co-workers are receiving an award at a nursing banquet in Pittsburgh the same weekend as the Detroit Marathon. A limo ride to Pittsburgh is involved, so it is a big deal. So, I will be with my wife that weekend. However, she will be accompanying be to Vegas that year and says she will attend the pre-race dinner with me.

Sorry to hear you're not coming to Detroit, but you're doing the right thing. So does this mean you are coming to Vegas this year? I thought you couldn't because of sweeps or something that wouldn't allow you to take off work????
