Helmet Question

I was talking to a guy in a local bike shop (trying to find replacment pads for my helemt) and he mentioned that if my helmet was 4-5 years old it should be replaced.

True?

Thoughts?

RE: Helmet Question

I'm no expert on cycling or helmets. However, 4-5 years seems to match what I have seen regarding replacing cycling helmets.

RE: Helmet Question

Four or five years is a good time to replace a helmet, even if it hasn't been crashed - UV exposure gradually degrades the foam so that eventually, it may not adequately absorb the impact in a crash.

Besides, it's a good excuse to get a flashy new helmet...;)

RE: Helmet Question

It is also good to change your bike every few years. Just kuz. You'd never see lance on a five year bike! Granted he rides more in a year that I do in a decade, but I am sure that has nothing to do with it...

RE: Helmet Question

I just bought a Bell Sweep:

I wanted a helmet with better ventilation for Louisville, than my Bell Solar.

Jenson USA still has them on sale for $104 plus shipping:

They had some other helmets on sale too such as the Giro Atmos for $130:

Funny you should say that....on our ride last night, one of our riders (who rides a '99 Trek 5200) broke his chain, after having his front wheel taco'ed racing last week.  We were all (half) joking he should just get a new bike... :P

RE: Helmet Question

If it is in well condition then there is no need to change it. But if it has any damages then you should replace it with new one. I have bought a new one just before 3 days ago because my old one is crashed by me during cycling.
